The workload may seem overwhelming, but your teachers will most likely understand that you and your classmates are making an adjustment. If you feel that they don't understand this and you're having trouble with the amount of work expected of you, make sure you talk about it with a parent or the counsellor. Always remember to use your school Agenda. Check the school web site for your homework!! You can never use the excuse that your dog ate it!!!
MARKS:
Back in elementary school, some of your teachers may have graded you with marks like "check plus," "excellent," or a number scale. Now that you're in middle school, chances are that you'll be graded with the letter system: A, B, C, D, or F. An I mark means you get a second chance to complete the work. There is usually a deadline you have to watch..if you miss it you automatically get a Fail mark. If you complete your work you will be assigned a C or C+. Your counsellor will be checking your marks every report card period and you may be assigned to attend a workshop on study skills or organization.
Lockers:
Instead of lugging your stuff around in one bag, or stashing it in a classroom desk or cubby, you now have a place to store everything safely. The best part about your locker: being able to decorate it with photos, drawings, magazine clippings, and anything else that makes it feel like you. Remember, you have to clean it out the end of the year!! The worst part? Sometimes, students end up with a locker next to somebody who picks on them or knows their combination because they have lurked over your shoulder. See your home room teacher immediately.
Library!!
Our school library is bigger then the one in your old school. The library is a great location for studying and doing homework as well as using the computer. Mrs. Lewis is the person to see for any information.
Your Timetable:
A different class, in a different room, at different times on different days?Wow! No doubt about it: the middle school "class schedule" can seem pretty hairy at first. You'll probably have it down in no time. If you have trouble finding something, or keeping track of where you have to be, speak up! Your teachers, counsellors, and other school staff are there to help. Keep a timetable on your fridge at home so you know what your day will look like and wont forget to bring certain books.
Extra-Curriculars at Noon Hour in the gym:
Here's one of the best parts about middle school: the chance to get involved in intramural sports and activities. From basketball to volleyball, these "extra-curriculars" are a great way to make friends, explore new interests, and, of course, have lots of fun.
